About Taylor TX
A Railroad Town on the Rise Again
Taylor was founded in 1876 as a stop along the International-Great Northern Railroad in Williamson County, named after railroad executive Edward Moses Taylor. It quickly became one of the most important cotton market towns in Central Texas, with a commercial district that grew up around the depot and courthouse square. Taylor's historic downtown retains much of its character from that era, with a self-guided walking tour of over 25 architecturally significant buildings and the renovated 1923 Taylor High School building now housing local shops and restaurants.
Taylor has a distinctive place in Texas history through one of its most famous residents -- Dan Moody, who served as Texas Attorney General and then Governor in the 1920s. Before his election as the youngest governor in Texas history, Moody successfully prosecuted four members of the Ku Klux Klan at a time when the organization held significant political influence across Texas. The Dan Moody Museum in downtown Taylor tells his story and his lasting impact on Texas justice. Taylor is also known for its cameo appearances in major films and TV series, with locations used in productions including Transformers, Varsity Blues, and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series.
Samsung and a New Chapter
Taylor's trajectory changed dramatically with Samsung's announcement of a major semiconductor fabrication facility investment in Taylor -- one of the largest foreign direct investments in Texas history. The project has brought significant economic attention to the city and is driving new residential and commercial growth. Taylor ISD is expanding to serve a growing student population, and the city's combination of historic character, lake access at nearby Lake Granger, and proximity to Austin make it one of the most interesting cities to watch in the Greater Austin area.
