About Belton TX
Bell County's Historic Seat
Belton was established in 1850 as the seat of Bell County and has served as the county's governmental and commercial center ever since. The Bell County Courthouse, originally built in 1884 in a Renaissance Revival style and meticulously restored in 1999 to its original appearance, remains one of the finest courthouse buildings in Texas and an anchor of Belton's historic downtown. The downtown district contains nearly 100 buildings constructed between 1870 and 1959, including Cochran Blair and Potts, the oldest continuously operating department store in Texas, founded in 1869.
Belton is also home to one of the most unusual chapters in Texas religious history. In the late 1800s, the city was home to the Sanctified Sisters -- a group of women who formed a religious community, ran a successful farm, and lived communally in Belton for several decades. Their story is preserved in the Bell County Museum, which offers free admission year-round.
Lakes, Rodeos, and a Growing Community
Belton sits between two major Central Texas lakes -- Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake -- giving residents exceptional access to boating, fishing, swimming, and camping year-round. Stillhouse Hollow Lake is consistently rated among the highest quality lakes in Texas for water clarity. The Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area (BLORA) adds waterslides, horseback riding, and a marina to the outdoor recreation mix.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, founded in 1845, anchors Belton's educational identity and draws students from across the region. Belton ISD serves the city's growing residential population. The annual Fourth of July celebration -- recognized by USA Today as one of the top ten Fourth of July destinations in the country -- draws over 50,000 visitors to Belton each year.
