About Leander TX

A Railroad Town With Deep Roots

Long before Leander had subdivisions, it had a train. The area that is now Leander was first settled in the 1840s by families who received land grants in exchange for service in the Texas Revolution. They built log cabins, relied on the Texas Rangers for protection, and established a small community called Bagdad -- named after a settler's hometown in Tennessee -- about a mile west of where Leander stands today.

Everything changed in 1882 when the Austin and Northwestern Railroad bypassed Bagdad and laid tracks one mile to the east. Rather than fight it, Bagdad's merchants, residents, and even churches picked up and moved to the new rail stop. The town was renamed Leander, after railroad official Leander Brown, and it quickly established a bank, doctors' offices, a drug store, and a thriving cedar post business that shipped timber by rail across Texas. By 1890 the population stood at around 329 people. The town incorporated officially in 1978, with Joe Bates serving as its first mayor.
